FELLOWSHIP IN HEMATOLOGY

Introduction:

The Department of Pathology, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) is pleased to invite applications for one year advanced fellowship position in hematology starting July 01, 2008. SKMCH & RC is a comprehensive and modern cancer care facility fully equipped and staffed to diagnose and manage all types of cancer.

The hospital has a team of UK- and US-trained pathologists who provide state- of- the- art diagnostic facilities to its cancer patients. The hematology section is divided into wet hematology dealing with CBC's and peripheral smears, bone marrow section, analytic flowcytometry, coagulation and transfusion medicine. These areas are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and staffed by quality conscious technologists and supervisors. The department participates in College of American Pathology (CAP) proficiency testing.

A variety of malignant and non malignant hematological cases are seen on daily basis. An average of 2300 bone marrow trephine biopsies, 700 flowcytometric analyses, 150000 CBCs, over 2000 apheresis procedures and about 5000 coagulation profiles are evaluated annually. These cases do not only come from the in-house physician referral services, but are also greatly contributed by outside referrals through our nationwide collection centers.

The fellow is expected to participate in routine sign-outs which will give them exposure to a vide variety of hematological disorders. Special emphasis will be given to areas where majority of trainees do not get formal training. These areas include flowcytometry, molecular hematology, immunohistochemistry and aphaeresis procedures. The fellows will be given exposure to stem cell transplantation. The department of pathology places emphasis on intradepartmental and interdepartmental consultation skills development. Fellows are required to conduct lymphoma and leukemia conferences in multidisciplinary settings. Participation in research activities is encouraged
