Summer Volunteer Program

Volunteering at Shaukat Khanum Hospital has proved to be the most unforgettable experience of my life. Seeing such young children struggle between life and death has truly changed my perspective of life. I will never be able to forget their determination. A moment that truly left me speechless was when amidst my conversation with a little patient she said, 'Agar zindagi rahi to mai doctor banoon gi'. I was speechless. I couldn't think of anything to say and in my heart I just prayed for her recovery.

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital is truly an institution we are proud to have in our country. The volunteer program was really special. The moment I will cherish for the rest of my life was when Nouman, a small child whom I was playing with, all of a sudden called me 'Chaachu'. I was really touched to hear him call me in such a loving way. Later when his dad came to take him, he blatantly refused to go and climbed up on my lap and held me tight. The little angel kept pushing his father away saying that he was going to stay with 'Chaachu'. It was truly a special moment for me.

On the eight day of my volunteering, it was raining heavily. I was around five minute late. The previous day I had met Rehman; he had enjoyed doing different things with me and I had promised him that I would come again to meet him the next day. As usual, when I entered Shaukat Khanum, I headed to Chemobay where I had been stationed. As I was entering the Chemobay ward, I saw that Rehman had positioned himself in such a way that that he could see anyone going through the corridor. First I gave him a smile to him. At first his face seemed unaffected but gradually his smile spread so wide. He has nearly ecstatic to see me; a glow had appeared on his face. At that time I realized how special I was to him….it was really a special moment to see the unexpected smile on the face of this young soul.

I started my volunteer work with a girl named Zain. She was very beautiful and jolly person. I spend whole day with her. We were in the gift shop when her mother came in. She talked to her mother in Pashto and I didn’t understand. Then Zain’s mother looked at me and said ‘Zain has been asking me to go home since the day we came here, but now after spending one day with you, she is asking me to allow her to stay one more.’I was so touched to hear that and had tears in my eyes! This was definitely my special moment.

Coming to Shaukat Khanum was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I saw how dreadful cancer is and how cancer patients get cured. Previously working in other charities I only learned how to do community service and help improve the society but by coming to SKMCH I saw little children between the ages of 4-10 old fighting for their life. Overall the experience was great. Working with other volunteers was fun and we had a great time together. Even the staff was very co-operative. The whole hospital being centrally air-conditioned was another attraction for volunteering at SKMCH. In my last few words I would just say that SKM is an example of discipline and a symbol of love for humanity.

These two weeks at SKM have been one of the most memorable periods of my life. It ‘s amazing to see kids who are half and even a third of my  age struggling and bravely dealing with cancer in a way that I couldn’t even imagine. Playing with them and making them laugh makes me feel proud that I have brought a change to someones life. It’s a very small change, but a change nonetheless. This volunteer program has been a wonderful experience and I would gladly do it again soon.

Working in Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital as a volunteer was a wonderful experience. Shaukat Khanum provided me with a wonderful opportunity to interact with cancer patients. I become very close to a few patients. The most prominent among them was a patient “Jannat” with whom I got really attached. The special moment with her was when I was transferred to another department and did not see her for two days, she kept waiting for me. When I saw her again she asked me the reason for leaving her without even telling her. The extent to which she missed me, brought tears in my eyes. She is indeed very special to me and that moment too was very special.

Being at Shaukat Khanum Hospital as a volunteer was an adventurous and wonderful experience which taught me that every child is special in his/her own way. The time that I spent with the patients and the staff developed my interest in becoming a Doctor. The best part of my stay here was the interaction with a particular patient who became very close to me. Our supporting staff helped me to acknowledge the fact that this Hospital not only deals with cancer patients but also cares for their brighter future. Overall I had a great experience here and learned the importance of human life.

When I volunteered at SKMH I thought it would be a good time pass, but I never knew that I would get so attached to these children that leaving SKMH would be the most difficult thing to do. Their innocent faces and their friendly nature touched my heart deeply, and has left a life long compassion in me to help the less privileged in the society. Those children had something remarkable in them. They had such strong will power that they believed that they would win every game we played with them. I pray for their long life and if my presence has improved their day, I am undoubtedly the happiest person on earth.

mehraabmajeed Working at Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital as a volunteer helped me get a closer look at life. I saw the roughness, difficulties and tragedies that creep unseen upon us. But yet I saw hope in the eyes of those who were in this battle field hitherto. Walking through the doors of the Gift Shop at the Hospital and seeing Abuzar in good health, contented my heart every day. I had met this little angle on my first day to work and I could perceive that he was special. Skipping work at ‘Radiation Department’ just to meet him convinced me of the special bond that I had begun to share with him. Days passed. It was fun to have him around. Gladly he felt the same in my company and made me a special card saying he had learnt to make it in Swat. On my fifth day at work he did not show up. I waited all day and then the next and so on till my last day but he did not come. The Gift Shop seemed life-less without him and I began to wonder what had become of him. Was he unwell I wondered? Then I heard that he was getting better and did not need to come here anymore. I missed him but the news of his recovery was so comforting that I cannot express in words. I thanked Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital for gifting me with such precious moments of my life, which I will never be able to forget.

Working as a volunteer in SKM was definitely the coolest experience of my life. I always considered myself as a person who’d feel uncomfortable around kids, however, I was wrong. Seeing these kids fighting this disease so bravely, I was determined to make an effort to put up smile on their faces. During these 2 incredible weeks, I really got attached to 5 kids, Liaqat Ullah, Rehmat Ullah, Amrosay, Annas, and Hasan. It was always a pleasure to see how excited these guys used to get whenever we greeted them. Each day we would get hyper, play carom, board ludo, annoy each other and make total fools out of ourselves. It’s funny how we all got so close that even though most kids spoke Pashto, we were still able to understand each other. Every single moment was special. God bless these kids.

My internship in SKMCH was a wonderful experience. My every moment here was my special moment. I made numerous friends. The children who are fighting for their lives are brave, smart and lovely. Here, I experienced that warm feeling that you get after helping someone who is actually deserving and needy. Their one genuine smile is worth all the efforts you make. Their love is pure, their souls innocent. One of my little friends only knew Pashto. She could neither speak Urdu nor understand it, yet there was a special bond between us. I will dearly miss her bright eyes, her sweet and original laugh and I will also miss the way she used to hold my hand to show me around the gift shop. I must appreciate the staff. I have never seen such dedicated and compassionate people working under one roof. I m in love with these children and I will miss them immensely. May GOD bless them with health and happiness.

Coming to Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital was an exciting and enjoyable experience. Every part of my job brought me endless and everlasting joy. Everyone hates to lose but it was one of the strange experience that losing from the patient in chemo in ludo never made me sad rather the smile on the face of patients impressed on my heart. The small hands of the patients colouring different paintings was a scene of great satisfaction for me because for that small moment, they forget their own pain, sorrow and laugh with us. Now is the time for me to go and I want to stay more so that I can make more patients happy. But all I have now is the memories of the Hospital which I am taking with me and hope I come next year also. I’ll miss everything.

During my very short interaction with patients at Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital I experienced a lot of usage of my brains to store memories. The memories I gathered here were too many and I wanted to preserve them all. One of my very special moments at SKM was with a girl named Uzma, the invincible player of Ludo. I thought that I was the best and she proved me wrong every time she played. One thing I can never forget was her sparkling eyes whenever she saw someone else scoring a six, they were just like a lioness who had found her hunt for the day.

Shaukat Khanum Hospital provided me a wonderful opportunity to interact with the patients. We became a part of this organization and feel proud to be here. I actually realized the hardships that patients go through during the tough treatment and observed them quite closely. I grew close to a few patients here and visited them daily to chat and spend time with them which provided an inner satisfaction. This experience will always be remembered by me.

I interacted with many children during the two week period I was at the Hospital. Each one of them was special in their own way and has a special place in my heart. I made friends with a four year old girl - Mahnoor. I was the only one whose name she remembered which made me feel very special. Each day she waited for me. One day she said, 'When I grow up, I will get married and my father will dance on my wedding.' The words of the four year old touched my heart deeply and I prayed for her long life and for the fulfillment of her father's dream. I can never forget that moment. I salute the cause of SKMT. It is truly a remarkable place where there is no discrimination between the rich and poor. May Allah give health to everyone suffering from cancer.

tanseer It was a great honor and pleasure to be a part of SKMCH. Although it was for a very short time, but I enjoyed every bit. After leaving SKMCH I will really miss my friends\patients. Every patient was special but Hashir made a special place in my heart. He was the cutest little guy I had ever met. On the first day he was a bit shy but as time passed we became good friends. My most memorable moments were with Farmaish. He was really a very nice person and I really enjoyed his company. My most remarkable moment was when I played carom with him and it was my first attempt to play it. Something that really shocked me was the realization of the short distance between life and death.
The Shaukat Khanum doctors, staff, volunteers, family members were all great and I am very happy to have been given an opportunity to be a part of their team.
