The Department of Internal Medicine at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital has Resident Training Program in Medicine. This program is approved for training for the Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (FCPS) and also is approved for the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP). Residents in the program are exposed to broad based training in internal medicine. There is an extensive outpatient experience with clinics in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Pulmonary Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Endocrinology, Nephrology and Internal Medicine. Outpatient experience in general outpatient medicine is provided in the employee health clinic.Residents also rotate through the intensive care unit which provides extensive experience in critical care medicine of medical, surgical and pediatric patients as well as experience in critical care cardiology. Residents also rotate through the inpatients and also rotate through the Consultation service. In the inpatients they gain experience in the inpatient care of medical patients and on the Consultation service gain extensive experience of providing subspecialty inpatient consultations in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Infectious Disease and Pulmonary Medicine.Residents are also trained in a wide range of medical procedures including central venous lines and chest tubes.There is an extensive formal teaching program for residents. There are formal didactic lectures in all specialties three times a week. There is a daily tutorial or multiple choice question teaching session everyday. There is journal club once a week where new published articles are reviewed. Residents are trained to do literature searches and to utilize the internet effectively to solve clinical problems.
