Consultant Physician (Internal Medicine)


The Hospital is looking for highly-motivated and committed individuals to undertake positions as Consultant Physicians in the Department of  Internal Medicine, who will be expected to provide Internal Medicine expertise in the day-to-day management of sick cancer patients coming to the Emergency Room, Outpatient Clinic and those admitted.

The Physicians will also have the opportunity to collaborate with oncologists to improve the outcome of cancer treatment at SKMCH&RC and be expected to participate actively in the teaching and training programme for junior doctors in the Internal Medicine Department. Consultant Paediatric Surgeon

The Paediatric Surgeon provides expertise in the day to day management of children with cancer and works closely with Paediatric Oncologists towards a common goal of improving the outcome of cancer treatment for children at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre. The Surgeon will be expected to participate actively in teaching and training programmes for junior doctors in the departments of Surgical Oncology and Paediatric Oncology and also to liaise closely with Hospitalists and Physicians in other specialties as well as with other staff within the hospital.

This position is for a highly motivated and committed individual to undertake a key role as a full time Consultant Pathologist. The consultant is expected to have expertise in all aspects of pathology, but with specific expertise in histopathology, cytopathology, haematology, or molecular biology. Site specialization is imperative in the development of these services. The pathologist is expected to collaborate with colleagues within the department to develop Pathology Services and liaise closely with Surgeons and Physicians in other specialties and staff within the hospital.

  • MRCP Path (UK) with CCST in Pathology.
  • American Boards in Pathology (CP/AP). Post-residency fellowship in a branch of Pathology would be an advantage.

Consultant Gynecologic Oncological Surgeon:

The post is based at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center, Lahore. Pakistan.
This is a position for a highly motivated individual, who will be expected to take part in developing cancer services under the umbrella of the Shaukat Khanum Healthcare System, in Lahore.
The Consultant Gynecologic Oncological Surgeon is expected to provide Gynecologic Cancer Surgical treatment to sick cancer patients in collaboration with other site specific teams in order to attain a common goal of improving the outcome of cancer treatment for patients at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. The selected individual will need to be able to provide evidence of training in, and experience of, surgical management of patients with gynaecologic malignancy, including multi-modailty management of cancers of the cervix, uterus and ovary.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • FRCS with CCST in Gynaecology and evidence of satisfactory completion of sub-specialty training in Gynaecologic Oncology surgery.
  • American Board in Gynaecologic Surgery, with sub-specialty training in Gynaecologic Oncology surgery.

Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon:

The post is full-time, based primarily at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore, Pakistan.
 
This is a post for a highly motivated and committed individual to undertake a key role as a full time Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in the Department of Surgical Oncology at SKMCH&RC. The Consultant Surgeon is expected to provide Plastic and reconstructive surgical expertise in the day to day management of Head & Neck Tumors and Breast Tumors.
 
The individual will collaborate with Anesthetists and operating theatre staff to ensure provision of optimal plastic and surgical services to sick cancer patients. The individual will be expected to work with and support the established multidisciplinary site specific teams, as appropriate.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • FRCS with CCST in Plastic Surgery and / or evidence of satisfactory completion of sub-specialty training in Plastic Surgery.
  • American Board in Surgery, with sub-specialty boards in Plastic Surgery.
  • Full Registration with the PMDC.

Visiting Nephrologist

The post is visiting, based at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore, Pakistan.

The candidate is expected to provide expertise in the day to day management of cancer patients with nephrologic issues in the outpatient, inpatient and intensive care settings. This includes advising colleagues caring for cancer patients with nephrologic co-morbidity on the optimal management and treatment of such illness. The appointee will be expected to work with and support the established multidisciplinary site specific teams, as appropriate.

Fellowship Programme in Clinical Oncology:

This is a unique opportunity for comprehensive training in all aspects of non-surgical oncology. The fellows will rotate through various site-specialist oncology teams involving both the departments of Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology over five years for a comprehensive general oncology training experience. Formal teaching for the FRCR (Clinical Oncology) syllabus will be provided. Trainees are expected to pass the FRCR (Clinical Oncology) examination by the end of year 4. On successful completion of training, a certificate will be issued by the institution confirming Completion of Specialist Training.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • MRCP (Internal Medicine) from UK or Republic of Ireland
  • Diplomat American Board of Internal Medicine
  • Candidates who are awaiting the results of MRCP Part II PACES are eligible to apply but appointment will be subject to confirmation of success.

  
Fellowship in Paediatric Oncology

Applications are invited for a three year Hospital fellowship in Paediatric Oncology. The Hospital sees approximately 300 new paediatric cancer patients annually, and has a multi-disciplinary approach to cancer treatment. All Paediatric cancer patients are treated by teams of medical, radiation and surgical oncologists. The hospital is, therefore, ideally suited for a postgraduate training programme in Paediatric Oncology.

We offer a unique learning experience that will prepare the selected candidates to become well trained, highly qualified paediatric oncologists of international standard. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on research, with a number of cancer treatment trials in progress at any time. Fellows will be trained in various aspects of Paediatric Oncology including in- and out-patient management of complex cancer patients, management of oncologic emergencies, radiation oncology, cancer radiology, supportive care and research methodology. The fellowship training period is 3 years.

Fellows who perform very well during their training may be offered an additional year of training at an affiliated institution in the US or the UK, which will be arranged by SKMCH & RC.

Fellows who successfully complete the required training, including training abroad, will be eligible for appointment at a consultant level at SKMCH & RC.


Eligibility Criteria:

Fellowship in Medical Oncology

Fellowship in Medical Oncology is a planned expansion of an established Medical Oncology training programme recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. The fellowship training period is 3 years, leading to FCPS in Medical Oncology on successful completion of training and passing the college examination.

Close to 5000 new cancer patients are seen annually. There is special emphasis on multidisciplinary approach to management of cancer with site specialist teams comprising of medical, radiation, and surgical oncologists, specialty physicians, radiologists and pathologists. This offers a unique training experience for the trainees to learn and understand all aspects of management of solid tumours and haematological malignancies, which will prepare them to become well trained, highly qualified oncologists of international standards. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on research, with a number of cancer treatment trials in progress at any time.

Fellows, who successfully complete the required training, succeed in obtaining the FCPS in Medical Oncology and have the requisite overseas experience, will be eligible for appointment at a consultant level at SKMCH & RC.

Fellows who perform very well during their training may be offered an additional year of training at an affiliated institution in the US or the UK, which will be arranged by SKMCH & RC.

Job Description:

  • The training post(s) is for a period of 3 years.
  • The selected candidate(s) will rotate through various site specialist oncology teams over 3 years to allow exposure to the whole range of oncology. They will be supervised by consultant oncologists during each attachment with regular appraisals to ensure adequate progress in training.
  • The selected candidate(s) will be involved in patient care in outpatient clinics, inpatient floors, and in the chemotherapy bay.
  • They will participate in an on call rota for assessment and management of patients presenting to the emergency assessment room.
  • They will be expected to participate in the academic activities of the department including presentations, research, audit, and teaching junior doctors and nurses.

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • FCPS in internal medicine.

Fellowship Training Programme in Infectious Diseases:

Applications are invited for a two year fellowship in the field of Infectious Diseases. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan has recently recognized Infectious Disease as a sub-specialty of Internal Medicine and SKMCH&RC is a CPSP-recognized training site in Infectious Diseases. Graduates of the programme will be expected to take the sub-specialty examination leading to the FCPS [Infectious Disease].
Training will be imparted in clinical infectious diseases and will involve outpatient and inpatient settings as well as rotations in microbiology. Three infectious disease specialists are on staff at the hospital and the institution sees a very wide range of infections, both in normal and in immunocompromised hosts. Elective rotations to other quality institutions will be encouraged. Fellows who perform very well during their training may be offered an additional year of training at an affiliated institution overseas.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • FCPS in Internal Medicine.

Fellowship in Surgical Pathology

This is a one year post-FCPS fellowship in Surgical Pathology in the Pathology Department at SKMCH&RC. The department has an annual workload of 67,000 cases. The training programme will be supervised by experienced consultants with post-graduate qualifications from USA and UK. The department has facilities for frozen sections, immunohistochemistry, FISH and cytogenetics. The training programme will provide opportunities to interact with clinical colleagues by participation in interdisciplinary tumor boards. It will enable newly-qualified pathologists to improve their diagnostic skills and provide them with enough experience to work as independent consultants following completion of the Fellowship. The fellow will be expected to present papers in pathology conferences and submit at least three papers for publication in medical journals of repute. The duties will also include training of residents, especially in gross specimen handling and in preparation of tumour checklists.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • FCPS in histopathology

Residency Program (FCPS) in General Surgery

Department of Surgery has access to state of the art operating rooms. In addition to open surgical procedures, advance Laparoscopic Surgeries like Laparoscopic Colonic, Rectal and Gastric Resections are performed. Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomies are routinely done. Comprehensive Breast Cancer Surgery Service is available including facilities for Sentinal Node Biopsies.
TRAINING PROGRAM:
Four year training program in General Surgery (FCPS) at Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital & Research Centre with outside rotations at MAYO Hospital and Sheikh Zayed Hospital Lahore.

Eligibility Criteria:

Essential requirements in selected candidates will include the following:- 

  • MBBS (should have passed all professional examinations at 1st attempt obtaining at least 59% marks in Final Professional).
  • One Year House job.
  • FCPS part-I (Surgery and allied).
  • Computer literacy and good communication skills are essential.
  • Willing to work under pressure and able to take on increasing responsibility with time.
  • Skills and confidence in making precise and accurate decisions based on history, physical examination and all clinical information available.
