SKMCH&RC Achieved its Annual Budget Target for the Year 2012

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

The management of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre is pleased to announce that with the help and support of the people of Pakistan, the Hospital has achieved it’s annual budget target for the year 2012. In line with our mission, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre has continued to provide state-of-the-art cancer care to patients irrespective of the ability to pay this year too. Almost 75% of it’s patients were treated free of cost and till now the Hospital has spent almost 10 billion rupees on their treatment. Furthermore, on demonstrating excellent performance, the Hospital once again received the Corporate Excellence Award from the Management Association of Pakistan (MAP).

According to hospital records, after the Punjab, patients from the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province form the largest group of patients seen at the Hospital hence the construction of the Hospital in Peshawar is the need of the hour. The construction of the 2nd Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Peshawar has already been started, the cost of which is now estimated to be Rs. 2 billion. Moreover, the annual budget of the Hospital in Lahore is nearly Rs. 5.5 billion for the year 2013. This is undoubtedly a herculean task, but the SKMCH&RC’s management believes that with the support of the people of Pakistan not only this budget will be achieved but the construction of Peshawar Hospital will also be completed successfully.

Mobilink donates Rs. 3 million to SKMCH&RC

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Mobilink Foundation has contributed PKR 3 million towards the construction of an out-patient facility at the under-construction Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center (SKMCH&RC) in Peshawar, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. A cheque for this contribution was presented by Tariq Durrani, Regional Director (Sales), Mobilink to Dr Faisal Sultan, CEO SKMCH&RC in a ceremony organized at the Hospital.

Since the commencement of SKMCH&RC’s first facility in Lahore, nearly 40,000 patients have visited the facility from the province of KPK. The need for a facility in the province is further amplified by the existing lack of access to diagnosis and treatment. The contribution by Mobilink Foundation is intended to assist SKMCH&RC’s efforts to provide state-of-the-art facilities to the people of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa (KPK). Construction on the project has started in March 2011 and is expected to be completed within 3 years.

Addressing the ceremony, Tariq Durrani, Regional Director (Sales) Mobilink emphasized, “Mobilink Foundation is pleased to contribute towards the construction of an out-patient facility at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, Peshawar. Mobilink Foundation supports the efforts being made by SKMCH&RC for the alleviation of those suffering from cancer across Pakistan. The completion of this new state-of-the-facility in Peshawar will result in an increasing number of deserving patients getting access to medical attention.”

Dr Faisal Sultan, CEO, SKMCH&RC added, “We are grateful for this contribution by Mobilink Foundation, which will further enable SKMCH&RC to provide health facilities to deserving patients both from Khyber Pukhtunkhwa and beyond.”

The contribution of the out-patient facility is a continuation of the support provided by Mobilink to SKMCH&RC over the last many years. Each Ramazan, Mobilink also organizes a zakat and donation campaign to generate funding for SKMCH&RC, and also creates awareness through activities at various customer touch points.

Two new Tests introduced first time in Pakistan

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre has introduced two new pathology molecula tests for the first time in Pakistan.  First the BRAF Mutation Detection in melanomas and papillary thyroid carcinoma by real time PCR, and second KRAS Mutation Detection in colorectal cancer by real Time PCR, are the new additions in Hospital’s pathology diagnostics test menu.

BRAF mutation status is evaluated to guide treatment with drugs that target mutated BRAF, especially in patients with melanoma while KRAS mutation is used to determine eligibility for anti-EGFR therapy in patients with colorectal cancer.

It is pertinent to mention here that patients were referred to Singapore or USA for these tests and only those who could afford this expensive exercise were having these tests done abroad. But now the Hospital management feels proud by making these new medical testing facilities available for the people of Pakistan.  It is another step forward from SKMCH&RC to provide cancer care facilities to the people of Pakistan.

Dr. Asif Loya, Medical Director, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, was the chief guest on the occasion. The event was show cased at Lahore Polo Club today. Junior Polo League (JPL) opened the event with a cavalcade of 48 children on horses, that comprised of Riding Children, Polo Players and Tent Peggers.

The cavalcade was smartly turned out in an organized formation and presented a salute to the spectators, comprised mostly of children from schools such as The Care Foundation, Bali Memorial, Compass (Rahain), SOS, Rehel, Escorts, Gwyn House Aitchison College and Cancer patients from Shaukat Khanum. This totaled more than a thousand children along with over 1,500 spectators who turned out in great numbers to support the work of JPL and the Organizing Committee.

A young cancer patient walked on to the ground to cut the ribbon and let go a banner up in the sky that displayed the words “Ride Off Cancer”. This was followed by a presentation of riding skills by the children of the Lahore Polo Club Riding School.

An Aero Modeling display, tent pegging and a polo match by JPL players was shown to the guest children that were enthralled by the skill, determination and ability of the young riders.
The show ended with a presentation of a cheque of Rs:3.0 million that JPL players and members of the Organizing Committee had managed to collect. The cheque was presented to Dr. Asif Loya, Associated Medical Director of SKMH&RC.

Junior Polo League is the brain child of two leading polo players of the country, Agha Murtaza Ali Khan and Shah Qubilai Alam that worked together on purely voluntary basis to groom young children in to the fine art, skill and discipline of the great game of polo. It is their way of giving something back to the sport that gave them so much pleasure and recognition. Their objective is to raise a team of young players to the level where they can play for Pakistan as their national side and win the world cup. “JPL- Junior polo league is a breeding nest not only to nurture young polo players into professionals but also as social leaders, said Agha Murtaza Ali”. Privileged children learn virtues such as equality. They also learn that as they lead on in life it is their duty to develop the society as a whole around them and give back to their community, to become better leaders and humanitarians.

Shah Qubilai Alam added that “as polo students they are taught discipline strictly according to rules, they learn teamwork as they work in matches with their team mates and they learn patience and acquire valor, as they learn to control a beast much stronger than them”.

Dr. Asif Loya, while receiving the cheque of Rs. 3 million thanked the JPL, Golden Goals International and sponsors for arranging this event to support this noble cause. He said that children from schools and colleges played a vital role in the establishment of this cancer hospital and still are playing their active part, enabling it to continue its mission. The essence of sportsmanship builds character and JPL believes in instilling these qualities in an early age and setting the right foundations for a right character. This event was a first of its kind in Pakistan where children from all walks of life got together to raise awareness of the terrible disease of cancer. This was an event organized by the children for the children, to form a pact of unity and coming together as the future of this country.
