International Nurses Day (May 12, 2010):

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

The Nursing Division of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre [SKMCH&RC] will celebrate International Nurses Day on May 12 to recognize the significant contribution nurses make to quality patient care. May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession is marked as the International Nurses Day. The Theme for 2010 is: Delivering Quality, Serving Communities: Nurses Leading Chronic Care. This was stated by Virginia Ann Gumley, Director of Nursing/Nursing Education, SKMCH&RC, in a press release issued with regards to the International Nurses Day.

“Quality Care is one of the first principles of care at SKMCH&RC. Serving the Community especially the poor indigent cancer patient and family is the Hospital’s Vision and Mission” she said.

“Nurses Leading Chronic Care – Cancer is an acute as well as a chronic illness, with nurses providing care across this spectrum” she added.

“To achieve these goals constant attention has to be paid to delivering quality care which is very difficult and challenging. Nursing is both an art and science and nursing’s efforts in recent times have focused on the science of nursing. However, we must not lose sight the art of nursing and we must not lose the fundamental human relationship between nurse and patient. Nurses must cultivate a relationship of trust and in this way patients will obtain the most complete and beneficial care through a combination of healing techniques and conventional practices” she further added. “This was the real message for International Nurses Day – one which reminds us of the roots of nursing” she concluded.

SKM - The ultimate symbol of love for a mother:

Sunday, May 9, 2010

Working at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital has been a life changing experience for me. It’s hard to believe that in Pakistan or unfortunately what has become of Pakistan today, institutions like Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital continue to exist. The Hospital has stood the test of time and against all odds and norms of our society continues to serve the people of the country in an unmatched manner. There is no place in Pakistan where everyone is treated equally. Had it not been for SKM, the concept of ‘equlity’ would have been considered just a theory that cant be practically be implemented in the real world. They say that when Imran Khan presented his idea of making the Hospital to some of the top healthcare professionals, 19 of the 20 persons said it was just not possible to make while the one who said it was possible to make did not think it could be sustained. So what has kept it going? I am always extremely fascinated to see the level of professionalism of the staff, the rare smiling front-desk staff, the dedicated administration, the commitment of its staff to uphold the its principles, the honest and true leadership where systems are above people, and the fervor of its donors and supporters who keep it going and most of all the enduring love for a mother. The sheer existence of SKM makes me wonder just how much Imran Khan must have loved his mother to have done the impossible. Just how much pain did he witness to make him vow to not let anyone go through it in his country? How helpless he must have felt at losing his mother to cancer that he didn’t want any son to go through. What more could a son have done even after his mother left? SKM is truly the ultimate symbol of enduring love for a mother and an institution that truly needs to be recognized on Mothers Day. We give our mothers flowers and presents every year on Mothers Day but let us all vow to become the ‘Imran Khans’ of our mothers and do something more, that will make a difference for humanity even beyond our lives. Happy Mothers Day!
