50th St. Andrew's Day Symposium (teleconference) at SKMCH&RC:

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) organized its 50th St. Andrew's Day Symposium (teleconference) on Thursday & Friday, December 2nd & 3rd, 2010. The theme was ‘Five decades of Medical Progress’.  Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) was one of the first hospitals in Pakistan to have this telecasted live.

Attendance on both days was encouraging with more than 100 participants both from with-in and more so from outside SKMCH&RC who attended the symposium. The program covered Eight Different Specialty Areas looking at key developments over the past 50 years, but still with the emphasis very much on current and emerging clinical management issues. The sessions covered were Cardiovascular Medicine, Gastroenterology, Genetics, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Palliative Care, Renal Medicine & Respiratory Medicine.

Highlights were the Ballantyne Lecture on “Our genetic inheritance: a decade on from sequencing the human genome” by Professor David Porteous while Baroness Ilora Finlay, Professor of Palliative Care, Cardiff University, delivered the Sir James Cameron Lecture on “Palliative care – 2020 vision”.

Audience actively participated in the Q&A sessions with questions being emailed to the symposium organizers and replies telecasted live by the panelists.

Event was accredited by UK Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians, CPD Scheme (CPD approved activity code: 58033) while the Accreditation Review Committee (ARC) of the American Academy of Continuing Medical Education (AACME) designated this medical education activity for a maximum of 14.25 hours in the Category 1 credit of the AACME Designation.

There was no fee for attendance at the SKMCH venue but pre-registration was required especially for outside Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre participants (Aniqa Agha, Medical Education, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. It was an excellent opportunity to be able to attend an event of International magnitude, with focus on key areas of medicine which are also rapidly developing in Pakistan like Ethics in Genetics and Palliative care, while sitting here. We hope this to be the first of many such activities in future which we can view live and avail updates in fields of interest.
