Imran Khan Goes Home (May 22, 2013)

We are pleased to announce that this morning, Mr. Imran Khan was discharged home from Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. Imran walked from his room on the third floor of the Hospital to the exit on the ground floor, unaided. As previously explained, Imran will continue to receive regular physiotherapy and will need to wear a spinal support for some weeks to come. Imran will gradually increase physical activity over the next few weeks with a return to his full functional capacity expected in approximately six to eight weeks. 

While leaving, Imran thanked all his friends, well-wishers and the millions of individuals all over the world who had offered their sympathy, prayers and support throughout his illness. 

The entire staff of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre wishes Imran a speedy recovery and all the best for the future.

There are a number of fellows in Medical Oncology and Clinical Oncology as well as junior medical officers to support the consultants.

Trained oncology nurses provide services both in the outpatient chemobay and inpatient floors.

Facilities & Services

The department provides comprehensive medical oncology care for solid tumours and haematological malignancies, including chemotherapy and autologous bone marrow transplant. A facility for allogeneic bone marrow transplant is being planned. A recently expanded 15 bed chemobay ward provides outpatient chemotherapy facilities. Inpatient care for chemotherapy, supportive care and treatment of emergencies and complications is available. Multidisciplinary teams for a number of cancer types are well established including lymphomas, sarcomas as well as breast, genitourinary, ovary, gastrointestinal and thoracic cancers.

Training

Training in Medical Oncology has been established within the department. The fellowship programme in Medical Oncology provides training in all aspects of medical oncology through a structured training programme recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, leading to FCPS in medical Oncology. The department also supports a training programme in Clinical Oncology leading to FRCR(clinical oncology).

Research

The department has been involved in a number of in-house clinical research projects as well as participating in several multinational clinical trials. The department has contributed posters and abstracts to several national and international meetings.
