Imran Khan Goes Home (May 22, 2013)

We are pleased to announce that this morning, Mr. Imran Khan was discharged home from Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. Imran walked from his room on the third floor of the Hospital to the exit on the ground floor, unaided. As previously explained, Imran will continue to receive regular physiotherapy and will need to wear a spinal support for some weeks to come. Imran will gradually increase physical activity over the next few weeks with a return to his full functional capacity expected in approximately six to eight weeks.

While leaving, Imran thanked all his friends, well-wishers and the millions of individuals all over the world who had offered their sympathy, prayers and support throughout his illness.

The entire staff of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre wishes Imran a speedy recovery and all the best for the future.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

It is estimated that about 150,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed in Pakistan each year. Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center was built with the mission of providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic facilities for cancer patients irrespective of their ability to pay. Our resources however, allow us to accept only a fraction of this number for treatment. Therefore, the Hospital has to prudently manage its resources by accepting those cases that benefit the most from treatment. Based on this we have established medical guidelines on which we screen patients for acceptance for treatment at the hospital. Since the hospital has limited capacity, these guidelines are subject to change. There are four broad principles which govern these guidelines on which patients are accepted for supported treatment at SKMCH&RC and they are:

  • Patients who are diagnosed with cancer or have any indication of having cancer
  • Patients whose cancer is at a curable stage
  • Patients who are physically capable of withstanding cancer treatment
  • Patients who have not been previously treated for cancer

For this purpose, Walk-In clinics have been established in Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar to screen patients and accept them for treatment on financial support at SKM. Patients are seen on a first come first served basis at these three locations. If you are interested in getting financially supported treatment at SKM, or if you have any questions, please contact any of these three locations:
