SUCCESS STORY
| 16 Year old Safia Sultana, a young student from a village near
Samundri, Faisalabad, had been suffering from lower back ache,
generalized body aches, frequent bouts of headaches and high grade
fever with progressive loss of weight for two years. She was seen by
local doctors who prescribed painkillers, but the relief was minimal
and transient. Because of her illness, she was eventually forced too
abandon school.
Seeing no improvement and the girl’s unexplained yet persistent weight
loss, she was referred to Shaukat Khanum Memorial in August 2001.
| Here,
clinical evaluation discovered that she was suffering from acute
Myeloid leukemia, a type of blood cancer affecting a group of white
blood cells called myeloid cells, normally, these and other blood cells
are produced in a controlled way be the bone marrow (the spongy area in
the middle of bones). In someone with AML, this production process is abnormal. Large number of immature cells are produced and sent into the blood stream. In their immature state, they cannot perform their usual functions, leaving the person vulnerable to infection, anemia and bleeding. The cells can also collect in certain areas of the body, such as the problems were typical of such cancers. Safia was ready for successful chemotherapy but her family simply could not afford the high cost of treatment. All hope would have been lost her but the hospital accepted her as a fully supported patient and bore all her treatment expenses. Chemotherapy was intensively followed up for any relapse which fortunately did not occur.
Today the 21 years Safia is healthy and doing very well. We, at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, wish her a healthy, prosperous and long life.
