SUCCESS STORY
| 18 years old Sumaya Khalid is determined to become one of country’s
leading textile designers. This young woman is completing her 2nd year
in Fine Arts and has hopes and aspirations that every teenager dreams
of – of realizing her dream. There have been several setbacks that
young woman has had to face. Problems, that were serious and life
threatening. Sumayya faced cancer. However, she proved to be a
resilient fighter and has beaten the disease with the help of her
family and the care provided by dedicated team of doctors and medical
staff.
When she was just 9 years old Sumayya complained about a persistent
pain in her leg.
| Initially none of the local doctors suspected anything
serious, but when the pains continued, she was asked to undergo
numerous tests. The results were horrifying, particularly for a family with limited means and several other little children to think of . it was suspected that Sumayya had Osteo Sarcoma (Bone Cancer). Sumayya’s parents were desperate. Then family friend suggested that they take her to SKCMH in December 1998. As a patient in need of financial support, 75% of her treatment expenses were borne by the Hospital. Her mother recalls how her heart broke when on entering the premises the very young Sumayya read the name of the hospital and asked, “Do I have Cancer, Mummy?’’ She still vividly remembers her daughter’s answer to being told that she did have cancer, “Doesn’t matter, Insha Allah (if God is willing) I will get well”.
The three years Sumayya was under treatment were very testing times for the family. Her father a lawyer by profession practiced in Sheikhupura, while the family lived in Faisalabad. They had to shift to Lahore for Sumayya’s treatment.
This little girl did indeed get well. Now as a young adult she is a very active member of her household, participating in discussions on various social and political subjects. One of her favourite past times is reading books. She is indeed a symbol of Hope for all of us at SKMCH&RC.
