SUCCESS STORY
| Amir Khan is a bright and charming 13 years old boy and has
participated in a number of “Childrens’ Mela’ functions at Shaukat
Khanum Hospital. His sparkling bright eyes reflect his confidence and
determination to live a full and fearless life.
When he was 7 years old, he started to suffer from continuous pain in
his leg. This proved to be the onset of a life-threatening disease that
was destined to change his life. He was admitted to a local hospital in
Islamabad for tests and was found to have Ewings Sarcoma (a type of
bone cancer).
In 2001, a journalist told the family about free cancer treatment at
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre
(SKMCH&RC). | Soon thereafter, Amir was accepted for treatment at SKMCH&RC. Doctors at SKMCH felt that Amir’s leg could be saved with the right kind of treatment. Amir is the seventh child in a family for eight children; his father sells shopping bags near the Sabzi Mandi (Vegetable Market) in Islamabad. His parents faced the dilemma of providing for the rest of the children and at the same time making every effort to save Amir’s life.
Unfortunately, Amir, like any other child of his age could not resist the temptation of playing with his cousins while they were at his house during a football game and fractured his leg. This setback made it impossible to save his leg and it was finally decided to amputate his leg to prevent the disease from spreading. He bravely faced this loss and now uses a prosthesis.
He is, nevertheless, thankful to the Almighty for the fact that he is now cured.
Amir is now an eager student at his school and in recent examination he came first in his class. He loves to meet people and is able to capture their attention with his adorable smile and confident conversation. We wish him the very best of luck for the future.
