SUCCESS STORY

About six months ago Shaheena Iqbal a resident of Karachi. Developed an ulcer on the left side of her tongue. This ulcer gradually grew in size and was associated with sporadic pain and difficulty in talking. A biopsy of the ulcer diagnosed her to be suffering from Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the tongue.

Shaheena was referred to Shaukat Khanum Hospital for further management. Where she underwent surgery followed by radiation therapy. The surgical procedure, carried out by Dr. Adnan Shah, was an extensive operation in which the tumor and lymph nodes of the neck were removed in order to ensure against recurrence, the affected portion of her tongue was also removed.

Following this surgery it became increasingly difficult for Shaheena to swallow food, and she lost nearly 16Kg as a result. Prescription drugs alleviated this problem to an extent, and Shaheena was soon able to revert to a normal diet.

However, since Shaheena had lost a part of her tongue, she was unable to speak anymore.
A unique microvascular surgical procedure, probably one of the first of its kind in this part of the words, was then performed by Dr. Farid Ahmad Khan in an effort to help Shaheena regain her ability to speak.

Shaheena is now able to speak with ease, her life is back to normal and she plans to start teaching again soon. We at Shaukat Khanum Hospital wish her every success and pray that she remains a healthy and productive member of society.
