CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS AT SKM

The focus of our work is to evaluate the contribution of genetic & non-genetic risk factors to the occurrence of familial breast cancer (BC) & ovarian cancer (OC) in Pakistan, a country with the highest incidence rates for these diseases in all of Asia. We have previously investigated the contribution of two major BC susceptibility genes, BRCA1 & BRCA2 to familial BC & OC in Pakistan. Currently we are exploring the role of other BC susceptibility genes in our population. The knowledge so gained will lead to a better understanding of the causes of BC & OC and contribute to the development of improved preventive, early detection & treatment strategies.

In working towards these aims, a research study on familial BC is currently in progress at the Hospital. Inclusion criteria are as follows.

i)    Women with a diagnosis of BC < 30 years of age; or
ii)   Women with a diagnosis of BC < 50 years of age & OC at any age; or
iii)  Women with bilateral BC; at least one diagnosed < 50 years of age; or
iv)  Families having multiple affected BC &/or OC patients.

Any patient who fulfills any ONE of the above criteria is welcome to take part in this study, at no cost. Clinicians are also encouraged to refer such patients to participate in this study.
(Note: this study does not include any treatment.)
